Abstract - Innovation is a key driver of organizational renewal and success. However, providing the right environment for innovative ideas to emerge and develop is not easy. This is further complicated by the fact that the professional environment is increasingly virtual as globally dispersed organizational and inter-organizational teams collaborate on innovative projects, making effective information and communication technologies indispensable.
While many organizations have knowledge management (KM) systems, most of these have not been developed with the aim of supporting theinnovation process, and many do not even succeed in their primary aim, i.e. supporting knowledge exchange, as they do not take into consideration the emotional, psychological and social needs of individuals. In order to address these issues, we have developed a video-based connection tool, InnoTube, which makes full use of social network ties and Web2.0 technologies to support collaborative innovation. InnoTube provides a showcase for innovation-related ideas and their inceptors, as well as proactively encourages the development of social connections and the brainstorming of cross functional globally dispersed teams. Results of a successful initial pilot study in the automobile industry are also presented.

In the eyes of many, one of the most challenging problems of the information society is that we are faced with an ever expanding mass of information. Selection of the relevant bits of information seems to become more important than the retrieval of data as such: the information is all out there, but what it means and how we should act on it may be one of the big questions of the 21st century. If an information society is a society with an exponential proliferation of data, a knowledge society must be the one that has learned how to cope with this. Profiling technologies seem to be one of the most promising technological means to create order in the chaos of proliferating data. In this volume a multi- focal view will be developed to focus upon what profiling is, where it is applied and what may be the impact on democracy and rule of law. The book is the result of research conducted within the framework of the FIDIS (Future of Identity of Information Society) NoE (Network of Excellence).

What are the key challenges for change and innovation management in Middle Eastern companies and organizations in 2008?  What are the key competencies that enable people to manage change and innovation projects successfully? How can these key competencies be developed by using innovative learning solutions and specifically adapted to the specificities of Middle Eastern companies and organizations today?

 

In order to provide answers to these questions, Professor Albert A. Angehrn, Director of the Centre for Advanced Learning Technologies (CALT), located on the INSEAD campus in Fontainebleau, France, presents:

— a new INSEAD research and development project aimed at creating an innovative learning simulation that perfectly meets the requirements of Middle Eastern organizations in today’s world. 

 

Abu Dhabi Project launch

Our workshop in Abu Dhabi marks the launch of the project. 

Participants will learn about the latest research on change and innovation management and exchange experiences and best practices, as they help us to validate our knowledge on change and innovation management that will serve as a solid basis for the development of new, customized management simulations for Middle Eastern organizations.

Albert A. Angehrn holds a doctoral degree in mathematics, has been on the faculty of INSEAD, France, since 1989 and is currently professor of Information Technology. He also directs CALT, INSEAD’s Centre for Advanced Learning Technologies. One of his passions is the design of games and simulations, as he strongly believes in Learning-by-Doing. His current focus is on games providing rich learning experiences by allowing users to interact with realistically behaving virtual characters operating within realistic contexts and situations. His research has been published in several international academic journals. His projects have been awarded large research funds from the European Community, and bring him regularly in touch with interesting organizations such as IKEA or Ferrari, a number of banks and car manufacturers, and several innovative start-ups.

 

 

Professor Angehrn will be assisted by Dr. Florian Schloderer, who now resides in the UAE and is the ChangeMasters Middle East project researcher (email:  florian@schloderer.com )

 

EIS:  a unique learning experience for participants

The workshop will be divided into two parts. 

Ø       In part one the participants will play the EIS simulation, one of INSEAD’s most advanced management learning experiences, now widely used by corporations and academic institutions across the world.

In part two, through discussions led by Professor Angehrn, we will discuss the challenges and best practices of change and innovation projects in Middle Eastern organizations, thus offering the opportunity for the participants to share their personal experiences

AbstractThe vast majority of knowledge management initiatives fail because they do not take sufficiently into account the emotional, psychological and social needs of individuals. Only if users see real value for themselves will they actively use and contribute their own knowledge to the system, and engage with other users. Connection dynamics can make this easier, and even enjoyable, by connecting people and bringing them closer through shared experiences such as playing a game together. A higher connectedness of people to other people, and to relevant knowledge assets, will motivate them to participate more actively and increase system usage. In this paper, we describe the design of TENTube, a video-based connection tool we are developing to support competence development. TENTube integrates rich profiling and network visualization and navigation with agent-enhanced game-like connection dynamics.

The social web refers to an important constituent of the latest Internet revolution (also termed Web 2.0), which is the result of the transformation of the Internet from an information space into a social space. … Key to this social process is the development the online identity of the participants that consists of a patchwork of information of diverse origins and quality and which includes both the information explicitly provided by the users (in their home pages, social networking profile), information that can be inferred from their actions (people can express their opinion, and leave traces that are easily available), or generated by others explicitly (for instance when they provide an opinion) or implicitly (when people “vote with their feet” in favour of something or someone).

… Given the growing importance of this online identity, we would like in this special issue of JIDIS to investigate the identity aspects related to this social web.
